Calcium Stains: Causes and Removal

Calcium stains are the most complex stains to treat unfortunately; but they are not impossible.

Signs your pool has calcium stains:

  • White stains that do not brush off
  • Hard white film on your pool surface
  • White lumps that are growing and multiplying
  • The appearance of “icicles” running down the sides of your pool

Calcium stains (sometimes called ‘scale’) can form when pool owners do not keep their pH in balance. This happens most often to new pools. High pH is the perfect environment for calcium formation and growth. They can also form when a new pool surface is being applied. If you use white cement, it typically contains calcium that can form a layer on your pool surface. Once the calcium layer begins to grow it attracts more calcium over time. It can even become hard than the pool surface itself.

Thinking about leaving your calcium stains untreated? We do not recommend that. It can crack, break up, and damage your cement pool surface over time and cause costly damage to your pool.
