Forcing Spring to come…

The advantage of late winter is the bright sun that shows itself more and more each day. Having these brighter days makes the desire for spring much stronger and there is no better way to cure the gardening itch then with some indoor gardening.

Many times there spring flowering bulbs that never were planted in the garden. Don’t let them go to the compost, force them. By forcing your bulbs indoors you can create the feel of spring that is great for a decorating centerpiece or a get gift.

It is great to use a seasonal bowl or decorative piece you have and want to show off. Have fun with the way you plant the bulbs. Use colorful stones or other materials that can stabilize the bulbs if your container is clear. No matter if you use soil or decorative material, water and sunlight are a must. Keep the soil moist to the touch but not wet. It shouldn’t be too long before you see some sprouting start followed by beautiful blooms. If you don’t get any growth, don’t be discouraged, sometimes how the bulbs are stored or how old they are can cause them not to produce growth.

If there are not any bulbs available, grow a decorative display of grass! Why not have a live green centerpiece or basket? It is easy and fun to watch grow. Fill a glass or plastic container with soil and sprinkle the top with a annual rye grass seed. Water gently and keep soil moist but not wet. To sprout grass seed faster cover container with clear plastic to hold in humidity. Once the seed has sprouted uncover and keep in sunny location.
