I have stubborn Black Clumps – is it Black Algae?

Not sure if I have algae or not but I feel it may be. I just opened it chlorine levels are good but the pH and alkalinity isn’t there yet though. The water is clear but at the bottom I have clumps of black stuff that won’t go away and it is consistent to one area.  I have an above ground pool with a cartridge filter. Is this just dirt that needs more aggressive vacuuming or a type of algae problem?

Answer:

Clumps of black that are stuck to the liner would indicate black algae, you should get a product such as Black Algaeblack algaetrinetrine and follow the label instructions to help get rid of the issue. Black algae is very stubborn and hard to treat, so you may even have to do it twice.

Mold can form under a liner and look like black spots on the liner itself though it is mold that is under the liner and growing through the liner as well. If it is mold, there is really nothing that can be done about it until it is time for you to replace your liner.

So if you treat for black algae and it doesn’t change, it would point to mold.
