Is A Salt Pool A Chlorine Pool?

I get questions all the time regarding salt pools. There is a huge misconception in the swimming pool business that salt pools are chlorine free. This is not true at all. Normal NaCl (salt) is dissolved in the swimming pool water to a concentration of about 1 tablespoon per gallon of water. The water with the salt in it pass through a series of titanium plates and creates sodium hydroxide and chlorine gas. The chlorine gas acts as an oxidizer and destroys the organics in the water and then the chlorine gas reconnects with the sodium hydroxide to create water and salt and the process starts over.
