If you have a pool heater and you find it’s not working, don’t panic. It could be a quick fix. Follow our troubleshooting guide to help you through the process of discovering the issue.
Check these areas first:
- “Is the supply on? This could be natural gas, propane, or electric.
- Is the pilot light lit? If not, light it. This is only for heaters that require manual ignition of pilot light.
- Are the skimmer and pump baskets clean? Full baskets can restrict water circulation then the pressure switch will be off because of lack of circulation for the water to heat.
- Is the filter dirty? If so, clean it out as best you can. A clogged filter will also restrict water circulation. Again, he pressure switch in the heater requires sufficient circulation.
- Is the water level high enough? You may need to fill your pool to the standard operating level.
- Is anything impending the flow of water in your plumbing? Take a look around for pool toys, debris, even acorns… anything that could clog up plumbing.
- Are the valves open? Make sure they are all open.
If you feel confident none of the above issues are the cause for your heater malfunction, it’s probably time to call your local pool service team. Heaters are always kept in better working order when they’re regularly used. This will help prevent rust buildup. Also, if your water chemistry has been out of balance for a while this could cause corrosion of the heater- let your pool service team know.
