Q&A: Ask the Pool Guy: What can I do about a small crack in my fiberglass step?

Ask the Pool Guy Question:

We have a small crack in the top step of our vinyl lined in-ground pool. This crack was caused due to a void being under the step. We don’t want to replace the steps, but what type of material should be used to fill the void?

Response:

Sand is typically used under a step, along with a concrete footing. So the step is not going anywhere most likely. If you can dig under the step to get more sand in there that would be an option. Remember sand compacts over time, so you have to put much more in than you’d think. That being said, it is a common issue to develop a small crack in the step. If it’s below water level you can try to patch with silicone, though it will probably have to be touched up each season. If it’s above the water level you can usually just let it be. Replacing a step is a major renovation, and would need to be done at the same time as a liner replacement.
