Q&A Pool Turned Green After Adding Chlorine, what should we do?

We opened our pool yesterday, The water was fine with dirt on the bottom, after we shocked and vacuumed and let the pump run. We woke up today and the pool is green, it has algae inhibit in it and chlorine. Should we flock it?

If you shocked the pool and then it turned green I’d look at the pH being the culprit. If it is a flourescent shade of green, that is a common indicator of high pH and high alkalinity.

You can’t get a good reading of alkalinity and pH when your chlorine level is high. So I’d test the water, see what the chlorine level is, if CL is over 3, you won’t be able to read the others accurately. Let the chlorine level go down, and then adjust the rest of your levels according to what your test kit says.

One other possible cause of green is if you have well water/high iron content. Chlorine added to a pool in that situation can also cause the iron to come out of solution (ie be pushed out of the water) and also account for some discoloration. If that is the case, our FerriIron Tablets help remove iron from a pool that has a sand filter.
