iron on titanium plates

This is my second summer of using a salt generator for our small above-ground pool. Last year we had no problems with it. This year, our water stays clear as long as we only run our sand filter. However, when we run the salt generator (usually one hour at night), the water is yellow-brown in the morning. We have used your Ferri-tabs (with great success!) to clear the water again, then backflushed the sandfilter thoroughly, but the next time the salt generator runs, the water gets discolored again. There is also a brown discoloration on the titanium plates and ECO plates that doesn’t dissolve when cleaned per the manufacturer’s instructions. We have not added any new water to the pool since we filled it, so where does the discoloration keep coming from? Thanks so much for your help!

You likely need to use FerriTabs again to help remove more iron from the water. A salt generator produces chlorine which has a high pH. So when you run it, the pH rises, the metals in the water become visible, and you notice the discoloration. Salt systems run best at an alkalinity of 80ppm, a pH of 7.4. I’d treat with FerriTabs or SeaKlear to remove residual iron, and lower your pH with muriatic acid, and you should notice much less of the issue you describe.
