How do you run a pentair variable speed pump with an ichlor salt generator

Thinking of upgrading my single speed pump to a variable speed Pentair. Current ichlor salt system has an external timer which turns the pump and chlorine generator on at the same time. How will this work with the variable speed pump that has its own timer? If i want to run the pump say 6 hrs per day, will i need to set the external timer to the same time as the pump timer? or can i leave the salt generator permanently turned on, and it will only generate chlorine when it sense water flow? there seems to be no way to control the generator from the pump timer.

You are thinking correctly. If you power the salt generator so it comes on with the pump, it will only make chlorine when the system is running. The generator can be on the same breaker as the pump, and it can be left on even when the pump is running on the timer and will only start up when the unit (salt generating unit) recognizes the proper amount of flow – water running through it, and salt content in the water.
