Q: I order the ferri tabs. I know my pool water and water that i add from my well has iron. Last year i shocked the pool when I opened it and turned it green. I have opened my pool and only vacuumed it the water looks good, not as clear as it could be, but have not added any chemicals yet. Do I need to add chlorine to turn the water green for the tablets to help filter out the iron. I have a sand filter. Thanks
A:
No, you don’t have to wait for the water to change color. If you add a few ferritabs now and then filter and start chlorinating in 24 hours as usual they should be able to take it out before you can even see it. Just remember to backwash before adding, and then after 24 hours. Repeat if needed if you add chlorine and it does change. It is usually the change in pH when you add chlorine which has a high pH that forces the iron out of solution and allows it to be visible. So double check your alkalinity and pH numbers as well (though they do not affect the ferritabs much) they will affect the pool and mechanicals.
