Even though we may have 6 weeks more of winter we don’t have to hide but plan for the warm spring days ahead. Many of us have not seen the big bad winter as in years past and even were able to garden outside in January. The cold weather is necessary for nature to take a pause, rejuvenate and prepare for the big show ahead. We need to do the same, take a pause, rejuvenate and prepare for the big show!
What big show am I talking about? It is the theater in our own back yards. Our trees, gardens and even the grass give the performances of their life every year just for us to sit back and watch it unfold.
If you are ready to get your hands dirty then dig in! Start a indoor garden that can be moved outdoors when the weaather breaks, or give your house plants a dirt spa treatment. Buy a new pot, that makes you smile, some new soil and re-pot each of your house plants. Take the time to gently remove them from their existing pot and loosen the roots to let them have fresh air. You can even soak the roots in some fresh water to hydrate the plant fully before planting it in it’s new fancy spot. Dampen any soil to make it moist before you transplant. Give the house plant the full treatment of showering or wiping off the leaves, soaking its roots and even refresh it with a diluted mix of organic fertilizer and water to settle the new soil round it’s roots. Top off the experience with a slow release organic fertilizer to continue the special treatment for up to 3 months of nutrients.
Getting your gardening fix by treating our houseplants will strengthen and prepare those plants for the season to come. You may find that they too can’t wait to get the fresh air of spring under the canopy pool side, by they way they will grow after their day at the dirt spa.
