Is pool tile structural or cosmetic? Can I wait to replace it?

Answer:

Tile falling off is mostly a cosmetic issue and it would be something you could schedule for a future date. If you would like us to quote that for you, please send some photos over, 1 or 2 showing the entire pool, 1 of the pool equipment, and a couple of close ups of the areas of concern and we can get you some preliminary pricing.

Q: I have attached a few pictures of the pool, pool equipment, and areas of concern.  I am not sure if this is something that can be fixed or if all the tile and coping need to be replaced.  If you could tell me any and all options along with a ballpark price for each, that would be greatly appreciated.

A: We do recommend replacement of all of the tile. Trying to repair what you have would be very difficult, and they most likely wouldn’t stay up permanently.

We recommend 6″ tile for the best defense against tiles falling off the pool in the future – the smaller the pieces, the more likely you will lose some over time. You do have evidence of beam shear (the top beam of the gunite pool shearing in a horizontal line resulting from ground movement and patio pushing against the top beam of the pool). When the tile is redone, this will be repaired under the tile to prepare the surface for new tile, however, the beam never gets back to one piece/structurally as it was when first installed.Tile examples can be viewed here: http://www.legendaryescapes.com/resources-manufacturers/tile-selection-npt/6×6-tile/

If you are considering a future patio replacement, the best time to do this is when you are doing the tile and especially coping. Trying to remove the patio later could be done, however there is always a chance the coping will be damaged at that time as well. We offer textured patio, which can be seen on most pools in our portfolio: http://www.legendaryescapes.com/resources-manufacturers/concrete/

Coping: We suggest doing tile and coping at the same time if you think you will ever replace your coping. You risk damage to tile if you wait until later to remove the tile. It can be done, but make sure to buy and store extra tile that matches just in case.

We recommend Bluestone, Quartzite, or the Textured Coping for your pool, because of the curves we recommend the 4″ wide coping pieces if you choose quartzite or textured. Bluestone are more freeform in shape, and are on most of the pools in our portfolio.  http://www.legendaryescapes.com/resources-manufacturers/coping-styles/coping-materials-fiberglassvinylgunite-pools/
