Gunite pool repair

We moved in to a house with a gunite pool about 8 years ago. The pool is now 25 years old. We had it painted about 6 years ago. That is now bubbling and flaking off. There are tile pieces popping off. It also seems to be losing more water than normal, so I suspect a leak somewhere. I would like to invest in having new coping, tile and resurfacing. My husband thinks he can have it acid washed, painted and just replace the tiles. Do we need to have the pool resurfaced or is painting good enough.

If you have water loss painting isn’t likely to remedy the situation. When the pool is acid washed it takes a layer off the surface, so if you do have leaks it will likely get worse. Some more troubleshooting is in order to determine if you have some structural issues. A common place to check for leaks is in and around the skimmer in a gunite pool. Over time it’s a very common source of leak issues. You can use a dye kit to test.
