How do you start up a newly built plaster pool?

I’m not sure if this email will actually reach you but I need advice. So I am getting a new inground pool built into my backyard starting some time next month. I live in Northern California and my pool builder just told me that he will no longer be doing the new pool start up that it will now be on me. He is saying that chemicals aren’t needed for the first 7 days and that I just need to sweep and run the pool filter 24/7 for the first month and that I will be okay. I didn’t mention but it will be a pebbletec finish and he’s advising me plaster dust will be minimal and that this is a project I can handle. I’ve done a lot of reading and everything I seem to find or watch advises I need to do a lot of sweeping, but that chemicals will help. And, that I need to watch out for my calcium hardness and PH . My help I need from is what do I believe? What should I be looking out for? Is it common for a builder not to do the initial fill? And what tips can you give me for doing this initial fill and setup. I hope this email reaches you and I really do appreciate your time and channel.

Your pool builder should recommend a company if they don’t do startups – it is critical and you do need to carefully monitor all the chemistry and brush many times daily. For more information look up the national plaster’s council website- they have startup procedures on it based on the types of finish you get. It is something you could handle, or its something you can pay a company for -but you are right to be concerned. I’m not sure what builder you went with, but please double check their credentials because it doesn’t make sense to me that they wouldn’t share how critical startup procedures are.
