It is possible to install a salt water generator on just about any swimming pool system. The salt generator comes with the cell itself, and typically a transformer for the power. Salt is added to the pool to the level required by the type of generator installed, and it is highly recommended that a sacrificial anode (zinc anode) be added as well. So no, the water level does not need to be altered to add a salt water generator to a pool.
