Main Drain and Skimmer %

160 viewsHow To

I have a 18 x 36″ pool in ground roughly 27,000 gallons of chlorinated water . My question is I get a lot of debris ( sentiment – dirt , etc on the bottom of the pool usually do to the giant wind gust we get ? Would it make sense to run the main drain the majority of time at 100% if so, do I need to have the swimming pool pump in high-speed for the main drain to be affective ?Or would it be better to run the main drain at 80% and the skimmer at 20 . Or should it always be mainly skimmer .

Most pools are designed to have both the skimmer and main drain open 100% during operation. If you find you need to adjust the suction through the skimmer to be able to manually vacuum better, sometimes closing the main drain 50% will give you better suction. Other than that, I’d aim to leave them both open all the time and increase pump speed as needed to draw more water into the pump/filtration system.
