Non stablized chlorine

Hello,
My CYA levels seem to be rising due to some very hard water. I only use a puck of the Clorox chlorine tablet, and I wait until it has fully dissolved before adding another and I use the Clorox shock as well, but only when needed. My CYA level was so high last year I had to drain the entire pool. And this year my levels are about 150. I plan on draining half the pool and then adding fresh water. My question for you is…

Can I use a Cal Hypo shock and keep using the Clorox chlorine tablet? That way I don’t have two things raising my CYA levels and hopefully by just using the tablet it doesn’t raise my CYA level too high.

Thank you!

CYA levels will rise with the use of a stabilized chlorine tablet, such as the clorox tablet you mention. To stop increasing the CYA (cyanuric acid) level aka stabilizer, you’ll want to use only the calhypo shock, a liquid chlorine or another non-stabilized form of chlorine.

Reading labels is important to determine if your chlorine has a stabilizer additive. Also, buy chemicals from a reputable pool store whenever possible instead of a big box store who tend to import from countries without as much manufacturing oversight, many chlorine tablets from “off brand” manufacturers contain fillers that can impact quality pretty significantly.
