Pepper – Hard in the Bucket, is it safe to use?

1.18K views

I bought a 25lb container of Pepper in late July. I put the appropriate amount in my pool at that time.  Two weeks later, when it was time to add more, I opened the container and the Pepper was very hard. Not like when I first opened the container.  I store it in my shed which is dry and I kept the lid on tightly.  Can you tell me what happened or is it suppose to get rock hard once opened?

Thank you for taking the time to answer.

HI – I went direct to the source for the answer to your quetion. Matt is with API – the makers of pepper:

Pepper does not harden by itself, nor is it supposed to. The biggest culprit for hardened product is moisture, whether that be from a wet scoop being put back in the bucket, an ill seated lid o-ring, or even condensation, moisture tends to make the once loose granules meld together.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that even though the product may have become hard, it’s effectiveness does not diminish. Chunks of the hard product can be put in the skimmer and will dissolve within a few minutes, and still be as effective as  the day the product was purchased. As with any pool chemical, always be sure to open the bucket in a well ventilated area.
So, good news!
Hope this helps!
