First year using the merlin Smartmesh pool cover.
When i opened the pool the water was a green swampy mess.
I previously had a merlin solid cover and the water was always crystal clear.
You website states
“SmartMesh by Merlin is the ultimate pool cover. It features a patented smart mesh cover with a high-tech weave that allows water to pass through while blocking sunlight and debris up to 40 microns. When there is no sunlight filtering through your pool cover, algae cannot grow. That means less work for you when it comes time to take the pool cover off!”

If it’s blocking sunlight, why is my pool a green swampy mess?

Without knowing how you closed your pool and what your water chemistry levels were I’m making a few assumptions in answering your question, as every pool is different.

It depends on when you close and open your pool and the water temperature. Algae can’t grow when its cold, but if you’ve hit warmer weather it’s growing under the cover. Best practices with a  safety cover are to either add liquid chlorine under your cover right after the water thaws in the spring, or do an earlier in the season opening in late April or first week of May.

Other than that, just add liquid chlorine to shock and get your system running. Your pool will clear right up!
