If you check your pressure gauge on your pool filter and notice your pool water flow has been slowing down, the first thing you need to do is check your skimmer basket to be sure the water level is high enough for proper function and that leaves and debris are not covering your pool’s flow.
The first thing to check for in your skimmer is the water level. It should be at least 1/2 to 3/4 up to the skimmer opening. This allows enough room for water to flow under the top lip of the skimmer but not enough room for debris to make its way in.
Once you are sure the skimmer water level is accurate, perform some basic maintenance on the pool skimmer. Remove the skimmer lid from the pool deck and remove the basket. Empty the contents of the skimmer, and be sure to be far enough away from your pool that the contents don’t blow back in. Also, make sure not to chip the skimmer basket in the process. If you have the time, clean the basket with a garden hose. (A quick tip from Ask the Pool Guy is to grab a bucket and scoop some water from the pool, insert the skimmer basket, and give it a good swirl upside down).
After these steps are complete you can return your skimmer and replace the lid. Make sure the skimmer basket fits properly in the skimmer. This should clear up the slow water circulation issue and you can get back to using your pool!
