When My Saltwater Pool Is Green And Cloudy

Q: This year, we installed a Hayward SwimPure Plus (t-15 cell) for our 21,000 gallon pool. A whole new world for me, it seems.

Here is my question….my salt reading is 3000 according to the display. I did tests this morning and the reading shows 0.5 for free chlorine. This is using one of those strips that shows ph, free chlorine, alkalinity, and stabilizer. The other 3 readings on the test strip show to be in the ok range…only the free chlorine is low. How do I get my free chlorine up to an acceptable level?

My water has a gray/green cast to it and is a little cloudy.

Help!

A: Even with a salt system you should still shock the pool weekly. We like to use liquid chlorine. What this does is allow the used chlorine to “reset” and be available to sanitize as needed. If you can, use liquid chlorine, probably 3 gallons and continue to circulate, it should definitely help.

Also watch your pH and alkalinity. With a salt system those both tend to drift up, so keep alkalinity at 80ppm and pH at 7.4 and you’ll prevent cloudiness as well.
