In southern warmer climates you do not need to close your pool like we would need to do in Michigan. If your area doesn’t reach freezing temperatures for extended periods of time, you can keep the pool equipment circulating and the pool clean. You always want to keep the water balanced and allow enough water movement to prevent freezing issues. If you are concerned about freezing, turn your pool heater on to a temperature that is high enough to prevent the temperatures from affecting your pool water. Many new pool pumps have built0in freeze prevention and should ideally kick on to circulate the water before it reaches a dangerous level. It’s a good idea to check your pool yourself regularly, you never know when something could malfunction. And obviously, if the power goes out for any reason, your pool will not be able to regulate itself.
Keeping your pool operational during the winter is simple:
- Maintain pool water chemistry.
- Keep skimmer and pump baskets free of debris.
- Regularly backwash your filter.
- rain pumps that are not continually circulating to prevent freezing (i.e. unused pool sweep).
- If there is a power outage, drain your filter and pump by removing the drain plugs allowing all the water to drain out and to prevent freezing.
