When you added the new sand did the tube get covered putting it in? We use a cup to block any sand from getting into the center stem pipe. Also, did you check that the other laterals were all in great shape? Did the lateral get loose when you were adding sand to the pool?

Causes of sand returning to the pool could be caused by a variety of issues:

  • too much sand added to the filter
  • sand getting into the center stem
  • not backwashing enough before returning to filter mode
  • the multiport being put back on in the wrong position
  • a pump too powerful and pushing sand through the laterals
  • any other unknown crack/damage to the internals of the filter
  • using the wrong type/size of sand
  • not cleaning the stem and laterals out completely before replacing the damaged parts

Hopefully you can look over this list and see if anything jumps out at you as being the possible cause. Here’s a handy link to some parts in case you find anything else broken: Hayward S210 Sand Filter Parts

Best of luck!
