cloudy water

Have inground pool 20×40 33,000 gallons. Just opened. super shocked 4 days ago. current reading are 5-10 on total C, 5-10 on Free C, 7.4ph, 80 on total alk, 40 on Cyan, 500 total hardness. Have been running pump 24 hrs for the last 5 days. Sweeping sides and bottom 2 times daily. Pump is running 10-12 lbs of pressure and I backwash when it gets to 18-20. Water is not green but is hazy. I can see the (barely) bottom of the pool in shallow end 3.5 ft. Don\’t seem to be making a lot of progress in getting the pool clear. Help? I have Zeolite as filter media that is 2 years old.

Are you able to get liquid chlorine where you live? Our go to formula for a pool your size is one or two cases of liquid chlorine (12.5%) if possible, and a gallon of  muriatic acid. It seems to do the trick if the pool is still battling organic material from over the winter.

The calcium being 500 is over the top range of 200-400 for a gunite pool, so if you can do a partial water swap, that would be the next step.

Finally, the number one cause of cloudy water that won’t clear is the filter. Either not running it long enough (which you seem to be doing), or an issue with the filter media. We have not had success with zeolite long term and most people who have used it in their filters have gone back to either sand or glass media because it’s just not a long term fix, so I’d tackle that next.

Best wishes!
