Main drain/skimmer combo

2 holes in skimmer and float valve (spaceship). When my water level drops below skimmer level the float sucks down to the o-ring which i think it’s supposed to. But then my pump/filter runs dry within seconds. Shouldn’t the other hole be pulling water from main drain so pump doesn’t run dry?? Appreciate the help

It depends on how your pool was built. In two hole skimmers when we build, one of the holes is plugged. If the builder connected it to the main drain via an ancillary line in theory it would pull from the drain. Without knowing more about your particular setup we can’t say for sure. Just make sure the water level stays up above the skimmer, or plug the line to make sure the pump can run on the main drain only. If the pump is running dry it’s introducing air into the system that it can’t make up by pulling from the main drain.
