I have been struggling with flow for some time, not enough even to drive the cleaner. But,then, the pool heat pump failed ( was 16 years old). I installed a new heat pump, and my flow is back 100%.
Question is: so heat pump coils clog up over time? Can I do anything to mitigate it?

Yes, the pipes can plug if you have calcium buildup especially. Most heaters/heat pumps also have an internal bypass so not all the water goes through the tubing inside. That bypass valve can also be a point of failure and cause misdirection of water, or restriction if it closes /improperly regulates the water which can also be a flow restriction point.
