I have an inground 65 year old concrete pool. We have owned the home for 17 years and when we bought it the pool was full of dirt. We excavated it and there was small round tiles on the entire surface but badly damaged and missing in some areas. We chipped it all off, smoothed the surface some, acid washed, and then painted approx 5 years ago with acrylic pool paint. It was fine until last year we had a couple of small areas of the pool floor chipped up. We patched them with cement mixture and repainted those areas. Now this year as we are getting our pool ready for summer, we have the same issue. 5 different areas have chipped up. There are not long cracks that run thru the pool structure. It just seems to be a top layer that lifts up and chips off. What is the best way to repair this? I can send photos if that helps. I am located in rural southeast Colorado. The closest pool repair business is around 200 miles away.
Thank you.
What you are doing, dealing with the chips as they happen is about all you can do until you are ready for an entire pool refinish. Once a pool is painted, it will need to be painted regularly, and as you are experiencing you’ll likely have routine repairs and chipping. It seems that you are handling it as best you can.
For a more permanent fix the pool should be sandblasted, and a new finish of marcite/pebble or plaster be done to the entire surface of the pool.
